Distribution & Ward Top-Up
The Trust has a sophisticated ward/departmental topping-up service. All wards and departments are topped-up at least once a week, or more often according to demand.
The service enables nurses to utilise their time on patients rather than materials management and has resulted in less stock on the wards. Staff returning from their top-up send their orders electronically to the PB&DC where the stock is picked, packed and delivered via the pharmacy to the wards.
The off-site distribution process has enabled more valuable space to be utilised at the main hospital sites. The average service level to the wards is between 94.2-94.8%.
The off-site ward distribution service is being developed further and will soon include the Whittington Hospital as well.
Other pharmacy departments also receive drugs from the PB&DC. Some obtain all their supplies, whilst others use the PB&DC as a short-line store.
