Education & Training

The education and training of all grades of staff is vitally important. The Pharmacy Board sees the continual professional development of staff as key to maintaining efficient operational systems and increasing the motivation of the team.

We focus on this support function by aiming to train and develop our staff as fully as possible by embracing the principles of Continuing Professional Development for all Pharmacy employees.

Sara Dilks is the Principal Pharmacist for Education and training which is part of CPD for all staff is a high priority. All B grade pharmacists are expected to complete the Certificate in Pharmacy Practice within their first year by on-site study and practice. Pharmacists can proceed to take the full Diploma or an MSC in Clinical Pharmacy. Our regular clinical breakfast meetings feature internal and external speakers on a weekly. Technician training by NVQ and accreditation are in process. Participation in the Regional Technician Self-Development Scheme is encouraged.

An in-house course is designed for ATO and SATOs, and in Jan 2006 will be able to train for NVQ level 2. All our technicians and basic grade pharmacists rotate around the Trust to gain maximum experience and will participate in our competency based training programme. The Department trains eight pre-registration pharmacists each year and six student Pharmacy Technicians.

We organise once weekly clinically-oriented breakfast meetings which include a wide variety of topics and which all our staff are encouraged to attend.

We also access the extensive London Region pharmacy training programme and our own UCLH Trust in-house development opportunities. External qualifications in management and other areas are supported for all groups of pharmacy pratice staff. The pharmacy has also developed an in-house competency training package for junior pharmacists and technicians, which facilitates staff development across the department.

On-going Training and Development
As training and development are so important, the pharmacy Education and Training section of the pharmacy services are always trying to develop new methods of delivering this activity.
