Formulary & Drug Usage

The UCLH Formulary 1998 edition has been widely acclaimed as a comprehensive, protocol-based essential guide to good prescribing and cost-effective use of drugs.

It is recognised as a model for other Trusts and has been used as a starting template. The Formulary, available from Dillons bookshop, has also been distributed both nationally and internationally.

The Formulary and the management systems that produce it are critical in controlling the Trust's drug expenditure of approximately £12 million. The Formulary pharmacist works in close collaboration with the Directorate Pharmacist and Purchasing teams in producing recommendations for cost-effective prescribing.

Although NICE produce periodic assessments of new drugs, many specialist products are not covered. The Formulary pharmacist, therefore, has a major role in developing the Use Of Medicines Committee drug assessments. An updated version of the formulary is soon to be published.

The formulary pharmacist is also responsible for producing bulletins based on routine audits and drug usage reviews.

UCL Hospitals formulary pharmacists works closely with the other formulary pharmacists in nearby trusts and with local PCG pharmaceutical advisers.

Although a new hard copy formulary for UCL Hospitals will be available soon, plans are beginning to develop to provide the next edition on-line.
