About UCLH Pharmacy

The Clinical Pharmacy Service covers a diverse range of clinical specialities supported by 18 full-time Directorate Pharmacists.

The Directorate model was originally piloted by Haematology, with the support of the Clinical Director. Its success enabled the clinical team to be substantially expanded. There are now three senior clinical pharmacists designated for the joint, Haematology and Cancer Directorate.

At least one clinical pharmacist is attached to each Directorate. The expertise of our clinical team is well recognised throughout the Trust and London. Many of the clinical team assist the London School Of Pharmacy with their Diploma and MSC courses.

Their important skills are not only used for the whole range of clinical pharmacy activities but are also is supportive in business planning and identification of service developments. Clinical Directorate Pharmacists are regarded as independent practitioners and so can develop good relationships with all medical staff.

Key tasks include horizon scanning (identifying cost pressures), managing the drugs budget, prescription monitoring production of drug protocols and development of research projects leading to publications.

UCLH Pharmacy was the first department to organise its own in-house Clinical diploma (part 1). Our departmental meetings are accredited. Many other opportunities for further training are available.

The clinical team developed an interventions database together with the clinical team at the Whittington and Royal Free Hospitals. This database (CIID) has now been adopted as the Regional standard.

The Trust has an IV Drugs Administration Guide that was produced in close co-operation with other London Hospitals, such as the Hammersmith Hospital. The Guide was developed to improve patient safety at ward level. It has now been published by Blackwells and so is available to other Trusts. Many pharmacists have recognised it as one of the most comprehensive documents of its kind.
